As I said, I wanted to watch a movie. Alone. It's really nice to snuggle alone in the dark hall. I always feel better after watching a good movie, for a moment your mind is free from the daily matters that cluttered your head.
I went to watch Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Fire. A Hong Kong movie.
The movie was awesome. After a disappointing encounter with Storm Warriors and City Under Siege, finally a movie I really enjoyed. Tsui Hark is back with his elements. I have a high hope after watching the trailer in the internet. I am glad Andy Lau didn't look stupid and out of place like Aaron Kwok did in Storm Warriors and City Under Siege.
I grew up with Tsui Hark movies. He is famous for his martial arts and period movies such as The Master, Once Upon A Time in China, The East is Red, Iron Monkey, Swordsman, Hero and others(just to name a few). I actually have a collection if his movies and I kept watching them again and again without getting bored. Of course now-days you can watch all his great movies in Youtube for free.
Detective Dee is simply amazing. Mysteries, secrets, scandals - all entwined in a movie that is filled with spectacular effects, stunning views and landscapes as well as skillful display of chinese martial arts. The depiction of the great harbour and the palace are so grand and breathtaking. The movie is about the first female emperor in China(she's called emperor, not empress after the coronation) and the mystery killings of her officials. They were all died from a mystery fire that killed them from the inside and it's up to Detective Dee to solve the mystery. Somehow I think Tsui Hark is heavily influenced by Lord of The Rings judging by the underworld landscapes and the movie's scores. If you watch his previous movie, The Era of Vampire, you should know what I meant. At any rate, I really, really like this movie. Watch out for famous faces as well, if you watch Hong Kong movies in the 90's you should be able to recognize them.
By the way, read the English subtitles instead of Malay. The Malay translation is quite funny and not very accurate.
